The calming effect of routine

It seems to me that we Americans put a high premium on fancy vacations as a way to unwind from the stresses of the world. It also seems to me that we put so many expectations onto those vacations that they often fail to live up to the demands placed on them. I am a fan of simple routine as a way to destress and decompress from the pressures of a given day.

We all have stresses. It doesn’t matter if we are child or adult. Nature is a powerful antidote to stress. Every night that the weather allows it I sit outside and watch the sunset and the birds in the neighborhood bid the evening farewell. Usually there will be last minute birds that come to the feeder to get a last minute snack before tucking in for the night. Every evening between October and April there are 3 osprey that circle the neighborhood calling to each other as they choose their roosts for the night. Often there is a human element as families come out on bikes or on foot to take a stroll.

Sitting out each evening helps me relax. That sitting out is a routine adds to the calming effect for me. It adds a predictability to what is often an unpredictable day that results from the challenges of working with large numbers of other people. Having a nightly or weekly routine can help bring families together and can assist with transitioning from business to quiet.

Although I have focused on the end of the day routines any of these could be used as a to start the day.

Some things that can be done as a daily routine:

  • Take a walk.
  • Take a bike ride.
  • Take a jog
  • Build a place to do some yoga or meditation or prayer, outside.
  • Leave the headphones and cell phones at home.
  • Be with the people you are with, even if that person is yourself.
  • Share the sites and sounds.
  • Remember to breathe.
